On Sunday, September 11, 2005 at around 4pm, Rod Shade launched his 25-ft motorboat, The Drywall Outlaw, from Port Bay, NY out onto Lake Ontario. Once he was out on the lake, he phoned his girlfriend and then made several radio calls to other boats on the lake. His last communication was at around 8pm that night.
The following day, at around 1pm, the boat washed ashore at Moon Beach near Sterling, NY. The ignition was on, the throttle was engaged, the lights were on and the fishing gear was set. There was no sign of Rod.
A search for the missing man begain at around 2pm on Monday. Search planes from both the US and Canadian Coast Guards, along with two US Coast Guard helicopters a lifeboat and rescue boat searched the lake while a NY State Police helicopter and personnel from local fire companies searched the shoreline. The search continued until around 6am on Tuesday, September 13th. No trace of Rod was found.
A resident of Waynesboro, Franklin County, PA, Rod was a professional drywaller by trade and an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman. When he had the time, he would often go to Lake Ontario, where he had a trailer near Pulaski. Sometimes he would go with his long time girlfriend, sometimes with friends, sometimes alone. On his last trip, his girlfriend had gone with him but had returned to Pennsylvania while he stayed to do some more fishing. It is believe that he fell overboard and drowned in Lake Ontario.
Rod Shade was declared dead in June 2008.
