Case Details Kelly McBride was last seen at around 3 a.m. on February 18, 1984 at party in her home on E.8th Street in Northampton Borough. Her husband, James McBride, did not report her missing. About a week after the party, McBride called Kelly's mother in Michigan and told her that Kelly had left him for another man, someone she'd met at the mall, who had a mustache. Kelly's mother doubted the story, Kelly would never have left her 2-year old son behind, and called her ex-husband, Kelly's father, in New Jersey. It was Kelly's father who called Northampton Police.
On May 25, 1984, a witness observed a blood-stained mattress being removed from the McBride apartment. Based on this information, police obtained a search warrant and conducted a search of the premises that same day. Among the items found were a man's undershirt, a bedsheet, a towel and a piece of paper, all stained with blood, kitchen knives, 22-caliber shell casings, two 22-caliber spent cartridges, hair samples from several areas in the house and blood samples from the attic steps. A chest of drawers was found, with the drawer bottoms gone and the drawer fronts nailed shut. Bits of hair, skin and blood were found on the inside of it. The basement floor was dug up, but Kelly's body wasn't found.
Seventeen years after Kelly disappeared, James McBride was arrested, charged, tried and found guilty of murdering his wife. He is serving a life sentence. It is believed that he dismembered Kelly's body prior to disposing of it.
Kelly's father and stepmother got custody of, and eventually adopted, Kelly's son.
Kelly's remains have never been found.
