Case DetailsOn September 27, 1974, Kathy left her home near Smoke Run, Clearfield County, with a man that she reportedly said she was engaged to. She left her children from a previous marriage with a friend who was to watch them until Kathy returned. The children never saw their mother again.
During the initial investigation, members of Kathy's family told the police that they have received a note, that they thought was from Kathy. The note stated that she was leaving to get married. It also said that she would return in October for her children. The family members said that they didn't know who she had been dating, who she left the area with and had never mentioned leaving to get married. An acquaintance of Kathy's told police in 1976 that she was the one who sent the telegrams to Kathy's family and to the family watching the children. She said she sent them because Kathy had asked her to.
Another acquaintance said that Kathy came to her house that last day, but Kathy never mentioned leaving town. This woman saw a red Volkswagen pull up in front of her house. A man with dark hair and a mustache was behind the wheel. Kathy took clothes from her car, put them into the man's car and they both rode away.
Kathy was reported missing on October 14, 1974. Foul play is suspected.
